What can I say about this film? Well its grim, brutal, exceedingly and excessively violent throughout every scene and utterly hilarious (the deliberateness of said hilarity is subject to some debate). The films plot is your standard post apocalyptic fare, from the Mad Max school of society in ruins, built around a suitably ludicrous premise (A virus destroys the north part of the UK, the area is quarantined, now 30 years later a team has to go over the wall...blah blah blah, I think you get the drift).

Where this films greatest strength lies is that unlike most of its contemporaries that take them selves far to seriously, this film keeps a strictly tongue in cheek tone. Gone is the gritty style that we've seen in films like 28 days later, instead we have a surreal campness that has long been missed since the 80s apocalypse films. From crazed cannibal biker gangs to a deranged overlord in a castle (nicely hammed up by Malcolm McDowell), this film knows that its a guilty pleasure, it knows that it shall never be taken seriously and knows that its quite happy with that lot. All in all, the film is great fun. In an era where films of the genre desperately try to go for being as dark as possible, its good to have some harmless escapism.

A blog is born

Hello and welcome the opening, the inaugural and generally awesome first post here on Sonic Rantings. A blog dedicated to...well whatever I want to talk about really, from films to books to computer science to the stories I write to the occasional outbreak of politics.
